The Hays County commissioners court’s nearly surreal three-hour exchange over roads on Tuesday leads county news in the Hays Free Press. The fight was sparked by County Judge Elizabeth Sumter’s questionable authorization of $2,300 for an engineering consulting firm; Sumter acknowledges she did not follow procedure. … Two other northern Hays County papers carry stories on the corridor cities housing market. The Hays Highway reports that the Kyle, Buda and San Marcos housing markets are relatively stable, if not strong, compared to much of the rest of the country. The Kyle-Buda Eagle covers Uhland aldermen’s consideration of the 2,700-home Ranch at Clear Fork Creek subdivision [subscription required] planned for Gristmill Road and Texas 21. … Congratulations to my fellow officer in the Hays County Press Association, Jen Buindo of the Hays County Free Press. The paper announced this week that Buindo is the 2007 winner of the Jim Lehrer Award for her reporting on the Pedernales Electric Cooperative executive pay excesses.
