The state comptroller's office cut a check to San Marcos for more than $1.6 million this month, the city's largest January sales tax allocation in history. The city's take is 15 percent higher than January 2010, which was the city's lowest January allocation since 2006.

The former Hays County commissioners court spent at least $300 million on public projects, with most of the debt approved by voters. A new court seated last week will face spending issues of its own.

A man committed suicide Thursday outside Seton Medical Center-Hays in Kyle. Hospital staff was unable to save the man from gunshot wounds to his chest. Kyle police are investigating.

Kyle City Councilmembers approved a new lease agreement Tuesday night so Hays County could continue leasing the city-owned Wells Fargo building. The 85-percent rent increase still doesn't cover the city's debt service on the building.

Two Hays County families helped usher in 2011 with the birth of New Year’s babies. A Kyle couple gave birth to the first baby at Central Texas Medical Center, Vizente DeAndrez Gonzalez.

Kyle Mayor Lucy Johnson, who won office in a special election last February, has announced that she will run for a full term in May. In Johnson's 11 months as mayor, the city has made some changes.

Hays County officials who were either elected or re-elected in November will be sworn into office on Jan. 4 at the Hays County Courthouse. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.
