After more triple-digit temperatures and continued skyrocketing power demand, the Texas electric grid operator warned of a "high probability" of rolling blackouts, although as of 5 p.m. Thursday the danger appeared to have abated. The situation is not expected to be markedly different on Friday.

The power companies and execs at today's hearing on the rolling blackouts this month were familiar faces to the senators asking the tough questions. Over the years, they've helped bankroll the lawmakers' political campaigns.

A state senator says a chain reaction of problems involving the state's coal and gas plants appeared to be the cause — and wind plants were having trouble too. So far no blackouts have been ordered today....

ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, ordered rolling power brownouts Wednesday in San Marcos and across Texas as part of a statewide response to heavy power demand caused by cold winter weather.
