Someone has called about a rooster 62 times. THAT is pathetic! In the name of Angel please the animal shelter and animal control needs a major overhaul. We need to have a no kill shelter as well as vaccinations. The fees for not having a dog on a leash etc. are insane. Much less the adoption fee in itself. Please let the county take over the animal shelter so we can provide much more to the animals of Hays county. There are ways to make positive changes and thank you for all the people who havde been supportive of Angel. Let’s give these animals all a chance to have a better life! Always spay and neuter your pets! it saves lives of many others looking for love.

My dog happily killed an opossum who wandered into the yard, but coexisted quite peacefully with cats and children. I think what we have here is a case of: Monkeys eat bananas. I eat bananas. Therefore, I am a monkey.

Who is missing the point? Me? Doubtful. It seems like a real stretch, to tie killing chickens, with a likelihood of killing children. Is there a study somewhere, to back this up?

You are missing the point because you are ignoring the fact that the dog KILLED. Fortunately, it killed 12 chicken instead a child or children. Of course, only those whom don’t have child would protect an aggressive dog about to kill chickens and/or children. Additionally, the owners should be legal responsible for the misbehavior dog.

I would expect many dogs to kill chickens, if given the chance. What separated these dogs, was that the owner let them get out, apparently multiple times on the same day.

We have a large dog, which has never been exposed to, much less trained/socialized around chickens. It would probably take her all of 2 minutes to kill a dozen of them. We’ll never find out if she would, because she doesn’t run loose.

I’m still not sure that there was a better “real world” solution, but ideally (IMO) the dogs would have been housed at the shelter, at the owner’s expense, placed in new homes, at the old owner’s expense, and trained, at the old owner’s expense.

Again, I don’t know that this would really be practical.

If someone with some expertise had determined that the dogs had a low probability of rehabilitation, then that would be another matter altogether.

I’m glad someone else has realized that the clear message of this story seems to be that 1 dog > 12 chickens.

I don’t know that it’s necessarily fair to condemn a dog to death the first time he bites, but running roughshod over a dozen chickens isn’t exactly just a little nip…..

How often religious freedom advocates of the 1787 Constitutional Convention and early 19th century are ignored. William Penn, Andrew Jackson and Thomas Pinckney come to mind. Huguenots (Methodists), Quakers and Scots Irish Presbyterians had much to do with religious freedom in our country. There are fine examples of religious freedom and there are embarrassing examples of persecution. A cousin of George Washington once gave testimony to support the slaughter of Elizabeth Richardson aboard a ship bound for the colonies. There is no one among us who is completely innocent nor completely guilty.
A young girl standing up to religious power reminds me of Joan of Arc. Our Lord is the Lord of the conscience and our United States is a government of Laws, not of men.

The Vanderbilt policy was stated by its Chancellor as follows:

“We do, however, require all Vanderbilt registered student organizations to observe our nondiscrimination policy. That means membership in registered student organizations is open to everyone and that everyone, if desired, has the opportunity to seek leadership positions.”

The policy certainly could lead to some anomalies. A chess club dominated by only domino players; a Catholic group dominated by Protestants, etc.

While this is off the topic I wrote about, it does demonstrate some confusion in our society about the right to associate with whom we choose to associate.

Pls let me say a word on behalf of us chickens out here – some of us can’t speak for ourselves. We really don’t like being ripped to pieces by your otherwise friendly and gentle household pet dog. We know he never hurt a flea in his life until he had a chance to get at us. We don’t fight back to well. In the future, please do what you can to keep yr friendly gentle pet under control and not tempt him/her with an opportunity to rough us up.

For another interesting perspective, you should look into the all-comers policy Vanderbilt University has recently imposed to bar religious and other groups from campus if they insist on their members or leadership subscribing to the beliefs or purpose of the organization. The federal case law on the subject is somewhat conflicting. It appears the university will be able to press forward with this reprehensible position despite its discriminatory impact.

I know how we could save $100,000….,,,… and it would be easy……. Just have school board elections at the same time using the same equipment and locations as other local elections instead of their own independent election. It is the right thing to do for so many reasons.

This just sounds broken, all the way around. If decisions were being made in February or March, because of the 45 day requirement, this would seem to push those decisions out no further than April. If the district “does not have an accurate idea of available resources until May, June, or July,” then this would seem to provide limited (questionable) benefit.

There must be a way to get things to line up better, preferably without putting contracted employees in a tough spot. It would be interesting to see how other districts handle this – when they review/renew contracts, the start/end dates for those contracts, the notification period, etc.
