Guerrero says he’s running for mayor

Former city council member Daniel Guerrero said on Thursday he will run for San Marcos mayor, the third candidate to announce his bid for the municipal government’s top elected office.
Guerrero, a graduate of both San Marcos High School and Texas State University, said he will draw on a lifetime of relationships here to unite the city behind initiatives to create good-paying jobs, protect the environment and develop the workforce through education and training. His career in public service — for eight years as the director of a nonprofit that prepared under-privledged teens for college and the workforce and now as the San Marcos Education Foundation executive director — makes him particularly suited for the job, he said.
“The reason for my interest in running for mayor is to continue service to my community. I’ve been a volunteer my entire adult life. I see myself as a public servant and I want to continue in that capacity,” Guerrero said.
He will face council member John Thomaides, a small business owner who announced his candidacy last week, and recent Texas State University student Daniel McCarthy, a libertarian activist who works as a sales representative. Mayor Susan Narvaiz has not said if she will seek a fourth two-year term.
Guerrero, 33, won a council seat in May 2004 to fill the last year of Susan Narvaiz’s term who was elected mayor that year. He ran unopposed for a full term in November 2005.
While on the council, he served as the Hays Central Appraisal District board chair and the San Marcos/Hays County EMS board chair. More recently, he was co-chair of the county’s Complete Count census committee and is secretary of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce’s education committee.
Guerrero holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Texas State and a master’s in leadership and ethics from St. Edward’s University.
He said he expects a spirited race against Thomaides, his former council colleague, but that his will be a positive campaign focused on the issues.
“I have a great deal of respect and admiration for Mr. Thomaides and we have a good relationship,” Guerrero said, adding later, “The big difference between me and anyone else who may be running are my leadership and communication skills. I think what floats to the surface during a campaign is your ability to get people to buy into a vision for the city and really take ownership of getting there.”

It would be great to see voting records for any candidates who have held elected offices already. It would certainly help to line up the rhetoric with the probable action that would follow, if they were elected.
Sadly, you can’t really do this with all of the candidates, but it would still be helpful.
You know, in case anyone at the Mercury is bored.
Way to go Daniel! San Marcos needs a leader to bring us together for the common good. I’m so excited to see you’re in the race.
It sure would be nice to see someone educated in leadership & ethics running this town …
I agree with the thought that it’s a good time to give San Marcos a fresh start and away from the little cliques that have formed. These divisions don’t help anyone.
I’m not sure that returning after a 2 year absence from the council represents a fresh start.
Also, Daniel filed for re-election in 2008 and then withdrew at the last minute (a week before the filing deadline), followed by Saul Gonzales withdrawing a week after, leaving us with Fred Terry, running unopposed.
None of that sat right with me. It still doesn’t, really.
I’m not sure what is going to turn things around at City Hall, but I’m not feeling very warm and fuzzy yet.

Does an education in what is ethical and what is not make anyone else a bit suspicious? I mean, doesn’t it seem like this sort of thing would just make one better at being shady? I hope he’ll take into account all the things being said at the other website about transparency.
