Brad Rollins is a native of Henderson and a graduate of Henderson High School. He attended Kilgore College where he was executive editor of The Flare in 2000 and 2001. While a student, he was a reporter at the Longview News-Journal a regional daily where he also worked the design and copy desk some evenings. At the age of 19, he founded the twice-weekly newspaper, The Kilgore Star, which operated from May 2001 to June 2002. He then enrolled on a journalism scholarship at the University of Texas at Arlington where he was managing editor of the The Shorthorn, published four times a week, and majored in journalism and history. In 2004, he moved to San Marcos where he was a reporter at the San Marcos Daily Record for three years. He founded in April 2008 the San Marcos Mercury and The Mercury online newspapers with Bill Peterson.
Rollins has won numerous state and national honors in writing, reporting and design including awards from the Associated Press Managing Editors Association, Columbia Scholastic Press Association, the Society of Newspaper Design, Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, Texas Community College Journalism Association, the University Interscholastic League and the Texas Association of Journalism Educators. He is a charter member of the Hays County Press Club of which he is currently president. He is editor of the award-winning Hays Free Press, a San Marcos Mercury news partner.
