Regents give final approval to $62.5M events center at Texas State

FROM STAFF AND SUBMITTED REPORTS

AUSTIN — The Texas State University System Board of Regents has authorized construction of a University Events Center, which includes expansion and renovation of Strahan Coliseum, at Texas State University.

The board approved the project during its Aug. 18 meeting in Austin.

The multi-use University Events Center will add about 81,000 gross square feet to the complex, as well as an additional 1,800 seats to Strahan’s capacity by building out the eastern side of the arena. Construction will begin February 2017, with completion expected by fall 2018.

Estimated total cost for the project is approximately $62.5 million. The architect is Denver, Colo.-based Sink Combs Dethlefs; the contractor is New York-based Turner Construction Co.

Due to growth of Texas State’s student population, there is a pressing need to develop the University Events Center to accommodate additional seating and space in Strahan for commencement, convocation and special events, university officials said today in a press release.

Upon completion, Department of Athletics offices currently housed in Jowers will relocate to new facilities in the University Events Center. This will allow the consolidation of the Department of Health and Human Performance in the vacated Jowers space.

The project will expand athletic locker rooms, offices and support spaces for the men’s and women’s basketball teams, women’s volleyball, visiting teams and game officials. A new main entrance, pedestrian plaza, elevator, restrooms and concessions will upgrade the overall experience for guests.

The project will also include a new chilled water plant to serve the facility.

The number of new dorms that have gone up in recent years is staggering.

Ted,

Haven’t most of the new dorms built recently been replacements for old ones that were torn down though? I’d love to see how many net beds they added overall…..I’d bet it’s not as many as you’d think.

Strahan desperately needed a facelift, so yay this.

It looks like about a 40% increase in beds over the past few years, based on my recollection of old numbers.

It’s very close to 7,000 now. I think it was under 5,000 when it came up years ago, in a debate over how many students live in San Marcos.
