San Marcos Mercury | Local News from San Marcos and Hays County, Texas

The main lanes of Interstate 35 will be closed in north San Marcos and south Austin overnight starting next week for bridge replacement projects.

On the boundary between San Marcos and Kyle, construction of a new bridge at Yarrington Road will close the north- and southbound lanes alternatively beginning at 8 p.m. Monday, June 6 through Thursday, June 9. The interstate will re-open by 5 a.m. each day.

Drivers will be detoured to the frontage road at the closest exit, and returned to the mainlanes at the next available entrance ramp.

In Austin near the Travis-Hays County line, demolition of a decades-old overpass at Slaughter Creek will close both north-and southbound travel lanes 11 p.m. to 10 a.m. Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11.

During the closure, drivers can cross I-35 at either Onion Creek Parkway or Slaughter Lane. The closure will run from 11 p.m. until 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights, June 10 and 11.

The Slaughter Creek overpass will not be accessible for about a year, while a new, wider bridge is built, including a south-to-northbound turnaround. During construction, the signals will be removed so drivers will not have to stop at this location.

The project will improve mobility and enhance safety along I-35. Work also includes widening the southbound I-35 frontage road to two lanes through the Slaughter Creek intersection, as well as installing safety lighting from Slaughter Lane to Onion Creek Parkway.

Austin-based Capital Excavation Co. will carry out the $9.2 million project replacing the nearly 60-year old structure.
