12:34 p.m. FRIDAY, APRIL 8 | Two accidents happened in on south-bound Interstate between San Marcos and Kyle early Friday.

The first accident occurred near the Yarrington exit. Traffic had slowed down due to construction further up the road. An 18-wheeler crashed in to a truck that was slowing down, said Jerry Hendrix, chief of staff for the city of Kyle.

One man was killed and two additional passengers were transported to local area hospitals. There is currently no information regarding the condition of the two in the hospital.

The second accident happened a few hours later near mile marker 213. The accident is still under investigation, but it appears one 18-wheeler rear-ended another 18-wheeler. A car crashed in to the second 18-wheeler before being hit by an additional 18-wheeler, Hendrix said.

A man was trapped in the car for about an hour before he was extracted and airlifted from the scene.

Interstate 35 re-opened at 10 a.m.

3:45 a.m. FRIDAY, APRIL 8 | Police are working a second multi-vehicle accident on southbound Interstate 35, this one near mile marker 213, city spokesperson Kim Hilsenbeck said. At least three 18-wheelers and a passenger care are involved in the accident. All southbound lanes are closed.

1:54 a.m. FRIDAY, APRIL 8 | KYLE — Police closed southbound Interstate 35 at the Yarrington Road exit early Friday following a wreck that killed a man and seriously injured two others.

The three men were occupants of a pickup truck struck from behind by an 18-wheeler shortly after midnight, chief Jeff Barnett said in a press release. The force of the impact caused the pickup truck to strike a second 18-wheeler and then catch fire.

Kyle police officers were working in the area at the time assisting with lane closures for construction. The Kyle Fire Department conducted rescue operations with assistance from the San Marcos Fire Department.

All southbound lanes are expected to be closed for “several hours,” Barnett said. Traffic is being diverted to the access road.
