KYLE — Friends of former Mayor James “Bubba” Adkins are holding a benefit today to raise funds for his mounting medical expenses.

The event will be 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Down South Railhouse, 107 E. Center St. in Kyle. Live music will be performed by the Solid Senders, an Austin “rockin’ blues” band featuring Kyle resident Spencer Thomas.

Adkins, a native of Tyler, was diagnosed with late-stage prostate cancer last year, not long after finishing third in a comeback bid for mayor.

Adkins was elected mayor in 1997 and re-elected twice during a period of rapid population growth; the U.S. Census counted 5,314 residents in 2000 and 28,016 a decade later. In 2002, Adkins easily survived a recall election waged by an Old Guard livid with policies advocated by new City Manager Tom Mattis.
