FROM STAFF REPORTS

By the end of this year, Amazon.com’s fifth distribution center in the state will begin rising out of an East McCarty Lane cow pasture in south San Marcos. Site preparation, in fact, is already underway.

By the end of next year, the 855,000-square-foot “fulfillment center” will be in operation with at least 350 fulltime employees, according to project timetables codified in agreements with the city of San Marcos and Hays County.

That number is easy to say — 855,000 square feet — but exactly how big is that? Wrap your brain around Amazon’s forthcoming San Marcos distribution hub by comparing its footprint to those of other familiar places.
