FROM STAFF REPORTS
Oceans Behavioral Hospital San Marcos, a 24-bed senior psychiatric facility, began accepting patients last week in a renovated former gym at 1106 N. Interstate 35.
The facility will employ 36 people including nurses, therapists, social works and support staff, company officials said. The hospital’s staff emphasizes the overall health of its patients, treating medical conditions that may underly mental health issues. In addition to a board-certified psychiatrist, patients are monitors by general physicians, company officials said.
“Behavioral health is an often misunderstood illness, and we hope that by expanding our services into new communities we are able to serve those in need, educate the public, and — ultimately — improve attitudes toward behavioral health treatment,” chief executive officer Stuart Archer said in a written statement announcing the facility’s opening.
Oceans San Marcos is Plano-based Oceans Healthcare’s first facility in Central Texas; the company owns or operates 17 senior mental health facilities in Texas and Louisiana, the nearest of which are in Fort Worth and Katy. The San Marcos facility is expected to draw clients from cities along the Interstate 35 corridor between south Austin and north San Antonio as well as Fredericksburg, Kerrville and other Hill Country retirement enclaves.
In Hays County alone, the population of people older than 55 years is projected to increase 120 percent by 2020, said Scott Wilson, managing principal of Dallas-based SRP Medical, a healthcare investment and real estate development company described as a partner in Oceans San Marcos.
“There is a growing need for specialty hospitals like Oceans Behavioral Hospital San Marcos that address the acute behavioral health needs of seniors, and we want to fill that void,” Wilson said in a written statement.
