AUSTIN — The Texas Department of Transportation is hosting an open house on plans to alleviate congestion on Interstate 35 at Riverside Drive in Austin, proposals that include reconfiguring access roads and widening the bridge over Lady Bird Lake.
The meeting will be held 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Martin Middle School cafeteria, 1601 Haskell Street in Austin. A presentation on proposed improvements will be given at 6 p.m. followed by a question-and-answer period.
TxDOT’s ambitious I-35 Capital Area Improvement Program calls for reconstructing the interstate’s main lanes and access roads near Riverside Drive to straighten a curve that regularly snarls traffic, even when traffic is relatively light.
Other proposed measures for the segment of the interstate between Holly Street and Oltorf Drive include adding collector-distributor lanes under Riverside Drive to allow north- and south-bound through traffic to bypass signals, a project that will require widening the interstate bridges over Lady Bird Lake; redesigning intersections; and replacing the overpass structures at Riverside Drive and Woodland Avenue.
An average of 164,177 vehicles crossed Interstate 35-Lady Bird Lake bridge each weekday in 2013, the most recent data available from TxDOT.
TxDOT estimates the Riverside Drive plan will cost $109.6 million, none of which has yet been appropriated. The transportation department expect to complete schematic design and documents for federal environmental clearance by early next year, spokesperson Kelli Reyna said.
A virtual open house on the Riverside Drive segment of the larger I-35 capital improvement program will run July 21 to Aug. 3 online.
