NEW BRAUNFELS — Police say a 49-year-old Central Texas man was walking in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 shortly before he was struck and killed by an 18-wheeler early Sunday.

Edwin C. New of San Antonio died in the 5400 block of the interstate, near the Engle Road exit, at about 2:16 a.m. May 17 after being struck by a tractor-trailer, said New Braunfels police spokesperson David Ferguson.

Southbound interstate traffic was diverted to the access road for about four hours while authorities conducted an accident investigation, Ferguson said. Police do not expect to file criminal charges against the driver, a 44-year-old Houston resident, Ferguson said.

It was the second fatal pedestrian-auto accident on the interstate in New Braunfels this month. At about 9:45 p.m. May 9, Manuel Herrera Jr., a 54-year-old Austin resident, was struck by a passenger car as he tried to cross the interstate’s northbound lanes, Ferguson said.
