12:49 p.m. MARCH 20: National Corn Dog Day in San Marcos has been rescheduled for Sunday, March 22 because of anticipated rainfall.
FROM STAFF REPORTS
The San Marcos Main Street program will host its annual National Corn Dog Day celebration noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 21 on the Old Hays County Courthouse lawn in downtown San Marcos.
National Corn Dog Day was born in 1992 when two slacker friends in Corvallis, Ore. — gripped by a desperate case of munchies — were overcome with joy to find a 24-pack of corn dogs in the freezer. Because no one in the household knew how the corn dogs made their way into the right kitchen at precisely the right time, the discovery was hailed as miraculous.
San Marcos has observed the holiday for more than a decade in conjunction with March Madness. This weekend’s event will feature a three-on-three basketball tournament and highlight downtown businesses offering March Madness specials.
Residents can also take part in a corn dog-eating contest or enjoy corn dogs, tater tots and other grub — on a non-competitive basis. The event is free.
