NEW BRAUNFELS — A 20-year-old man was struck by a freight train early Saturday as he apparently sat or slept on railroad tracks in New Braunfels, police say.
At 4:19 a.m. Dec. 27, officers found Jo-Anthony Ontiveros lying injured and unconscious alongside Union Pacific tracks about 150 yards south of North Live Oak Avenue, near the H-E-B Soccer Complex, police Sgt. Victor Rocha said. He was taken by ambulance to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.
The operator attempted to stop the train when he saw a man on the tracks ahead and the train was moving slowly when it struck the Ontiveros, Rocha said. Based on a preliminary investigation, police think Ontiveros was either sitting or lying on the tracks, Rocha said.
Rocha did not release information about the extent of Ontiveros’s injuries except to say he regained consciousness while being treated by New Braunfels EMS paramedics at the scene. A hospital spokesperson did not immediately return a phone call from the San Marcos Mercury this afternoon inquiring about the extent of the man’s injuries.Email | Print
