FROM STAFF REPORTS
NEW BRAUNFELS — Two Central Texas men died this weekend in unrelated motorcycle wrecks in New Braunfels, one on Saturday in a school parking lot and another on Sunday on Interstate 35.
At 11:24 a.m. Dec. 6, Carl McMurtry, a 60-year-old New Braunfels resident, was thrown from his bike after striking a curb in the driveway of New Braunfels Middle School, 4150 Klein Meadows.
The victim, identified as McMurtry was found dead from an apparent head injury when first responders arrived at the crash scene, New Braunfels police Sgt. Chris Peltier said. McMurtry was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, the officer said.
At 6:06 p.m. Dec. 7, John Boyd Hayes, a 51-year-old San Antonio resident, was traveling southbound on Interstate 35 behind another motorcycle when he lost control of his motorcycle, crossed several lanes and struck the side of a sports utility vehicle. Hayes fell beneath the moving SUV, which came to stop with the man pinned underneath, said Lt. Craig Christopherson.
Investigators think the front tires of Hayes’ bike rubbed the rear tire of the lead bike, Christopherson said. Hayes was wearing a helmet.
New Braunfels EMS took Hayes to Christus Santa Rose New Braunfels hospital where he was pronounced dead. Neither the driver of the lead motorcycle nor the SUV’s driver, a 51-year-old San Antonio woman, were injured, Christopherson said.
Both fatal accidents are still considered under investigation by the police department’s traffic unit. Police do not expect to file criminal charges in either wreck, officials said.Email | Print
