Central Texas Medical Center has opened its new in-patient hospice center at the hospital’s main campus in San Marcos. According to hospital executives, the facility is the first in-patient hospice center of its kind in cities along the Interstate 35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio.

On Nov. 5, the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the hospice unit and offered tours of the facility, located on the second floor of CTMC Women’s Center at 1301 Wonder World Drive.

“As more Central Texans age, the demand for this specialized care is growing, and we have worked hard with the CTMC Hospice Advisory Board to provide it in a way that will serve our community well,” said Sam Huenergardt, the hospital’s president and chief executive officer.

The in-patient hospice unit features private rooms with 24-hour access for family members; counseling room; living room; and a pet-friendly policy.

“The transition from living to dying is difficult. We feel our Inpatient Hospice unit will help with this transition by providing a warm, home-like environment when hospitalization is required,” said Thea Dake, who chairs the CTMC Hospice Advisory Board.

The hospital is accepting donations to help pay for the unit. In June, advisory board member Barrie Breed announced a $50,000 gift to the hospice facility in the name of her late husband. Jeff Breed died from brain cancer in 2011 while under the care of CTMC Hospice.
