COMPILED FROM MEDIA REPORTS

A young Houston area man was killed and nine people were injured when a Friday afternoon collision on Texas 80 east of San Marcos set off a chain reaction that ultimately ensnared six vehicles including a highway patrol car.

Christopher Bauman, 25, of The Woodlands was waiting to turn left onto the Old Bastrop Highway from westbound Texas 80 when he was struck from behind by a Dodge Neon, ABC affiliate KVUE News reported.

The collision sent Bauman’s Nissan Altima into oncoming traffic where it was struck by a car and a truck. The careening Altima then struck a Texas Department of Public Safety vehicle waiting to turn onto Texas 80 from the Old Bastrop Highway, NBC affiliate KXAN News reported. A sixth vehicle was hit by flying debris from the wreckage.

Bauman was pronounced dead at Central Texas Medical Center at about 1:40 p.m. Friday. Two passengers in Bauman’s car, 22-year-old Jeremy Deanfield and 29-year-old Chad Calkins, are being treated for serious injuries at Brackendridge Hospital; the other seven injured people were treated at local hospitals and released, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

Leontiy Oleg, 20, of Kyle is under investigation for intoxication manslaughter, the American-Statesman reported, citing un-named police sources.
