8:33 p.m. FRIDAY, JULY 4: Despite intermittent, light rainfall, the fireworks display at San Marcos Summerfest is scheduled to begin at about 9:30 p.m.


11:44 a.m. FRIDAY, JULY 4: San Marcos will celebrate Independence Day with fireworks and festivities at its annual Summerfest.

A local tradition for 34 years, Summerfest activities include a children’s costume contest and patriotic parade, live music, local food vendors and, naturally, a spectacular fireworks finale. The free community celebration will be 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, July 4 at San Marcos Plaza Park.

Free parking is available at the San Marcos Activity Center, City Park and Texas State University’s Strahan parking lot at the corner of Aquarena Springs Drive and Charles Austin Drive.

Singer-songwriter Cheryl Murdock will open the festival at 6 p.m. at the San Marcos Plaza Stage followed by David Ybarra and the LA Blues Band.

Registration for the costume contest will begin at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Old Fish Hatchery Building. Participants in the children’s parade will begin lining up at 6:50 p.m. with the processional through the park beginning promptly at 7 p.m. Winners of the contest will be announced at 7:30 p.m. with prizes awarded for the most patriotic, the cutest and the best overall costumes.

Summerfest is hosted by the city of San Marcos, the San Marcos Convention and Visitors Bureau and the San Marcos Noon Lions Club. The event is chaired by Lisa Morris, the city’s recreation manager, and Rebecca Ybarra-Ramirez, the convention and visitors bureau’s director.

Returning as co-chairs of the 34th Summerfest are San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department Recreation Manager Lisa Morris and San Marcos Convention and Visitor Bureau Director Rebecca Ybarra-Ramirez.
