Two people died in a fiery crash after they attempted to flee from a traffic stop in San Marcos early this morning.
Just before 3 a.m. Monday, June 23, San Marcos police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a driver he suspected of impaired driving. The motorist fled at a high rate of speed in the Rio Vista neighborhood of San Marcos, a residential area with numerous homes.
The driver failed to negotiate the roundabout located at the intersection of Cheatham and Rio Vista Streets and struck the landscaping in the center of the roundabout. The collision caused the vehicle to burst into flames. Both the driver and passenger of the involved vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have identified passenger Charles Lee Crayton, 43, of San Marcos. Police cannot identify the driver at this time, and an autopsy is pending.
Members of the San Marcos Police Department’s collision investigation team responded to the scene to begin investigating and reconstructing the collision.
