The city’s Parks & Recreation department is calling for volunteers to work 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 14 on a mural being painted at Children’s Park on the San Marcos River.

Assisted by community members, artist Mabel Sirup will paint a mural depicting wildlife, early Anglo settlers, Native Americans — and, of course, the river itself alongside which the city has acquired and dedicated more than 103 acres as parkland.

“The mural will bring beauty to the park and create a teaching tool for citizens and guests of San Marcos to enjoy for years to come,” said Rodney Cobb, executive director of the city’s Community Services division, which oversees the parks department.

A native Monclova, Mexico — San Marcos’ official sister city through proclamation of both municipalities’ ruling bodies — Sirup moved with her family to Austin in 2001. She recently moved to San Marcos and transferred to Texas State University where she is pursuing bachelor’s degree in studio art.

Her work ranges from painting and printmaking, to sculpture and performance art. Sirup won honorable mention for her entry in a contest the city sponsored to design new manhole covers. A sampling of her work is on display at the Walkers Gallery at the San Marcos Activity Center and the Texas State Galleries I & II during the month of June.

The Childrens’ Park mural is the first of several the city plans to commission at highly visible places often targeted for vandalism.

Volunteers who want to help with the Sirup mural can contact parks department intern Arica Keilers at 512-393-8400 or by email here.
