DRIFTWOOD — Witnesses told authorities that Louis Antonio Ramos Jr., 27, “had been shot in the knee prior to [the] altercation” that killed a Driftwood area man Wednesday evening, according to court records obtained by the San Marcos Mercury.

Jessica McGuire, identified as Ramos’ wife, called the Hays County Sheriff’s Office at about 7:56 p.m. June 4 and reported a disturbance at 400 Todo Lane, according to an affidavit used to establish probable cause for Ramos’ arrest.

Deputies who responded to McGuire’s call found Johnny Lee Saxon, 47, fatally wounded in the chest outside a home at 500 Todo Lane next door. A shotgun was lying on the ground next to the victim, Floiran wrote.

Property records indicate that a mobile home located at 400 Todo Lane is owned by Saxon, the victim, and the mobile home located at 500 Todo Lane is owned by an Anita Saxon, 74, whose relationship to Johnny Lee Saxon is not described in Floiran’s affidavit.

Both McGuire and Anita Saxon told investigators that they saw Ramos with a handgun immediately before Saxon was shot.

“Ramos was in an argument with the victim and was seen with the gun just prior to the shooting. He fled the scene after the shooting. … Based on the evidence obtained by investigators on the scene, it is apparent that the victim in this case was injured and died as a result of the actions committed by one Louis Anthony Ramos,” Floiran wrote.

Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Beth Smith signed a warrant for Ramos’ arrest on a murder charge at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, court documents state.

Louis Antonio Ramos Jr. was found at about 2 p.m. today in the area of Mount Sharp Road and Coleman’s Canyon north of Woodcreek and Wimberley, Hays County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jeri Skrocki said. The suspect was taken to an undisclosed hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound to the leg, Skrocki said.

Ramos had been on the run since about 8 p.m. Wednesday when investigators say he killed 47-year-old Johnny Lee Saxon, who was found outside a residence at 500 Todo Lane near Driftwood. Deputies who responded to a report of an assault in progress found Saxon shot in the chest; CPR was performed on Saxon at the scene but he did not survive his wounds.

At about 8:30 a.m. Thursday, deputies found Ramos’ brown van hidden in the woods near the crime scene. Later today, a resident called 911 to report a “suspicious person” matching Ramos’ description in the area where he was later located.

Joined by state and other local law enforcement agencies, the sheriff’s office established a perimeter around the area where Ramos was hiding and began a manhunt that included aircraft and search dogs. The search for Ramos was joined by the Texas Department of Public Safety, the San Marcos Police Department, the Hays County Pct. 3 Constable’s office and the Travis County Sheriff’s Office.

After he is released from the hospital, Ramos will be booked at the Hays County jail where he is expected to be charged with murder, Skrocki said. The lieutenant said it is “unclear” how Ramos was wounded; investigators previously said that Ramos “may have been shot twice during the altercation” that killed Saxon.
