STAFF REPORT

Art Squared, the newly rechristened outdoor market featuring the work of local artists and artisans, will open its third season 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 8 in downtown San Marcos.

Formerly called Art UnHitched, the market will move this year from The Hitch food trailer court at 312 E Hopkins St., to the Old Hays County Courthouse square at 111 E. San Antonio St. The new location moves the event nearer to the San Marcos Farmers’ Market, held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday in front of the courthouse on San Antonio Street. Admission to both markets is free.

Art Squared organizers say they expect 20 local vendors on opening day, peddling pottery, paintings, sculpture, stained glass, fascinators, jewelry and other types of original art. Local musicians will also perform during the afternoon.

The city council-appointed San Marcos Arts Commission started the art market in October 2012. It is now being overseen by a new group, the Art Squared Committee, whose membership includes two arts commissioners as well as 20 local artists and art advocates.

The San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance is the featured non-profit community group for the March market.
