The San Marcos High School girls basketball team got one goal out of the way last week, but the larger goal got away Tuesday night.

With their 56-49 loss at Smithson Valley Tuesday night and a 57-44 win by New Braunfels against New Braunfels Canyon, the Rattlers are officially eliminated from playoff contention with two games left in their regular season.

The Rattlers now are 1-7 in District 25-5A and 12-21 overall. They are tied for last place in the district with Canyon (1-7, 7-21). New Braunfels and Smithson Valley both are 4-4 in the district and tied for third.

Wagner (8-0, 18-10) is winning the district, followed by Converse Judson (6-2, 20-7).

The Rattlers notched their first district win of the year last Friday at the snake pit, a 44-35 decision against New Braunfels Canyon. Shannon Mathis led the Rattlers with 15 points, followed by 13 for Raelyn Jackson.

San Marcos will play its final home game Friday night against New Braunfels. The Rattlers will end their regular season next Tuesday night at Converse Judson.
