STAFF REPORT

The San Marcos High School boys basketball team already is in the thick of what stands to be a very interesting playoff race in District 25-5A.

The pre-district record for the district’s teams says it all: Converse Judson had the best record (21-1), followed by New Braunfels Canyon (17-4), Wagner (15-5), the Rattlers (14-5) and Smithson Valley (15-7). New Braunfels was 11-11.

In a district this deep, every team will struggle to make the playoffs. Even a team going as well as Judson could trip a couple of times and find itself trailing against strong competition.

The Rattlers split their first two district games. They lost their district opener at Smithson Valley on Jan. 11, 48-45, in a tight game from begining to end. The Rattlers won their district home opener Tuesday against New Braunfels, 72-69.

Judson leads the district early at 2-0. The Rattlers are joined by Smithson Valley, New Braunfels Canyon and Wagner at 1-1. New Braunfels is 0-2.

Smithson Valley pounced on the Rattlers with a 22-11 third quarter, turning the game in its favor with a 38-33 lead. The Rattlers were never able to get the game back into their control. A.J. Carr led Smithson Valley with 11 points. Isaiah Brown scored 14 for the Rattlers, followed by 11 for Ben Acosta.

Following that loss, the Rattlers could not have liked their scenario after three quarters Tuesday night at the snake pit, tied with New Braunfels at 50-50. By the results so far, New Braunfels probably is the district’s basement team, so the Rattlers were close to starting themselves out at 0-2, dragging a home loss against the likely last-place team.

The Rattlers collected themselves, though, and won, 72-69. Aaron Gettys and Hudson Rice each scored 22 for New Braunfels, but the Rattlers had three scorers in Brown (23 points), Josh Coleman (17) and Jarrett Henderson (12).

The Rattlers have a big one coming up Friday, when they go to Judson (7 p.m.). The Rattlers will be at home on Jan. 21 against Wagner (7 p.m.).
