The men’s basketball season in the Sun Belt Conference begins on Thursday for Texas State, and grounds for optimism, at this point, are few.
The Rattlers fell to 4-9 overall Monday night with a 73-64 loss to Long Island-Brooklyn (LIU) at Strahan Coliseum.
The Bobcats held a 61-60 against LIU with 2:56 left. But Texas State made only one of seven field goal attempts down the stretch and LIU put it away at the free throw line once it took a late lead and the Bobcats fouled strategically to put the visitors on the line.
Joel Wright scored 18 points to lead the Bobcat, who made only 38.1 percent of their field goal attempts (24 of 63).
The Bobcats won at Strahan Coliseum on Dec. 28, defeating Texas-Tyler (UTT) , 73-54. Emani Gant, Wes Davis and Phil Hawkins all had 16 points for the Bobcats.
Against an out-manned Texas-Tyler team, the Bobcats had a party in the box score. The Bobcats shot 52.7 percent (29 of 55), compared with 36.4 percent (20 of 55) for UTT. The Bobcats also outrebounded Texas-Tyler, 47-21.
The Bobcats will debut in the Sun Belt Conference with two big games late this week at Strahan Coliseum. Arkansas-Little Rock will supply the opposition Thursday (7:30 p.m.), and Arkansas State will visit San Marcos Saturday (4:30 p.m.).
