The San Marcos High School football team took a blow against its playoff hopes Thursday night in a 24-7 loss to New Braunfels at Bobcat Stadium.
New Braunfels moved ahead of the Rattlers in the District 25-5A standings, improving to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the district. The Rattlers now are 3-4 and 0-2.
The Rattlers moved the ball inside the New Braunfels 20 early in the first quarter, but couldn’t turn it into points. Later in the quarter, New Braunfels began at its own eight and scored on a 68-yard touchdown pass.
The Unicorns forged a 21-0 halftime lead with second-quarter touchdown runs of one and three yards. The Unicorns extended their lead to 24-0 with a field goal late in the third quarter.
San Marcos scored its only points in the fourth quarter on a three-yard touchdown pass to David Hamilton.
The Rattlers now have lost three in a row, and the road isn’t getting any smoother. Next Friday night, they go to Converse Judson (5-1, 1-0), which is ranked tenth in Class 5A by Texas Football.
