Tonight’s Best Bet

The award-winning world-famous opera star and instructor Dr. Soon Cho (pictured) will sing tonight at Texas State’s Music Building Recital Hall for the 3rd Annual Artsong Symposium. While one could listen to Cho sing the phone book and be moved enough to weep tears of joy, the white pages will not be necessary as the program includes Bernstein’s “Arias and Barcarolles” as well as Samuel Barber’s “Dover Beach” (written to the Matthew Arnold poem) which one assumes baritone and Texas State Voice faculty member Oliver Worthington will sing. The program is a winning one and you’ll count  yourself lucky to be there. Side note: Bernstein’s inspiration for his piece was in response to what President Eisenhower said to the composer at a concert in 1960 ;” I liked that last piece you played; it’s got a theme. I like music with a theme, not all them arias and barcarolles.” Bernstein said the theme of “Arias and Barcarolles was “the politics of love.”
