Texas State linebacker David Mayo produced several big plays for the Bobcats in their 22-15 win against Southern Mississippi Saturday to start the football season.
The Sun Belt Conference recognized Mayo’s performance Monday by naming Mayo as the league’s defensive player of the week.
Mayo led the Bobcats with six tackles, four of them unassisted. He also made two huge interceptions.
The first interception came with 10:34 left to play on Texas State’s 15-yard line to halt a potential Golden Eagle scoring drive. The second interception was at the Bobcat 46-yard line on final Southern Miss possession with five seconds remaining in the game. Mayo also notched a nine-yard quarterback sack on fourth-and-10 with 1:38 left as Southern Mississippi attempted to drive for a tying score.
The Bobcats will have their home opener Saturday against Prairie View A&M at Bobcat Stadium (6 p.m.).
