Anyone who follows Texas State baseball will tell you that the upgrades to Bobcat Ballpark in 2009 have substantially improved the experience of attending a game while raising the baseball program’s profile.

Now, an Internet publication that has made a point of touring and ranking college baseball stadia has weighed in, ranking Bobcat Ballpark 38th across all of college baseball. Within Texas, Bobcat Ballpark ranked sixth, coming in ahead of parks at Baylor and Houston, among others. Bobcat Ballpark also ranked first in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), in which the Bobcats played last season, and first in the Sun Belt Conference, which Texas State officially joined last week.

The rankings are listed at Stadium Journey (www.stadiumjourney.com).

Ethan Grant of Stadium Journey critiqued the home of Texas State baseball on food and beverage, atmosphere, neighborhood, fans, access, return on investment and extras.

“If Texas State isn’t considered a baseball school in the scope of the conference it belongs to in the coming seasons, take a trip to Bobcat Ballpark and have your mind completely changed,” Grant said in his review.

Bobcat Ballpark earned five stars out of five in the neighborhood category and return on investment, based in large part to the fun atmosphere of San Marcos and the Hill Country, fan support and consistently competitive teams.

“It doesn’t get much better than San Marcos, Texas,” the review said.

The park won four stars in the atmosphere and fans categories. However, the park gained only three stars for the access (“Be prepared for parking and traffic situations to dampen an otherwise nice trip to Bobcat Ballpark,” in the review’s words) and food and beverage categories, while taking only two stars in the “extras” category.

Bobcat Ballpark lists a capacity of 2,000, but adds to that with standing room. The Bobcats set their all-time single-game attendance record in 2013, and its top ten crowds were all checked in since the renovation.

  1. I agree on all points. I love taking in a baseball game (or a softball game, next door). It’s awesome to have a team to root for, right here in San Marcos, and the park is great.
