On July 4, the City of San Marcos and San Marcos Plaza Park will host Summerfest, a free Independence Day festival featuring food, music and fun.  Utilizing the same area as the Sights and Sounds of Christmas, Summerfest will contain the sights and sounds of summer with a variety of activities for all ages.

The festival starts at 6 pm. with the opening of food and activity booths. Live music will be provided by the classic indie rockers Edison Chair. Parade registration begins at 6:30 p.m. so that kids in costumes can strut their red, white and blue stuff. The 4th of July Children’s Costume Contest and Parade will start at 7:00 p.m.

Around 7:30 p.m. David Ybarra and the LA Blues Band will take the stage. “LA”, by the way, stands for “local area” as all of the members of the band are from San Marcos and environs. The popular band has performed for Summerfest San Marcos for last 34 years save for one year that flooded the party out. The band plays a lively variety of rock, blues and Tejano music.

To end the show, colorful display of fireworks will take place at 9:30 p.m.

Free parking for Summerfest is available at the Public Library and Activity Center parking lots, City Park and Texas State’s Strahan Coliseum parking lot. The Lions Club’s tube rental at City Park will be open for business all day.

Summefest is an alcohol free event.  No alcohol, glass or pets are allowed at Summerfest. Styrofoam of any kind (cups, plates, coolers) is prohibited in the park. For more information about city park rules, visit
