The Hays County Commissioners Court pronounced June 18 as Hays High School Lady Rebel Softball 2013 State Champions Day in Hays County to honor the 18 players and their coach, Aaron Fuller.
The Rebels won the Class 4A State Championship, the first state athletic championship for the school in any sport since it was founded in 1968.
Hays County Precinct 2 Commissioner Mark Jones said it was sports that first drew the towns of Buda and Kyle together when the school district was consolidated.
Before the consolidation, Kyle High School and Buda High School were contentious athletic rivals. Indeed, the rivalry was one of the stumbling blocks to consolidation that originally included Wimberley, which had been sending its students to San Marcos schools. Wimberley separated from the Hays consolidation in 1986.
The Rebels won the state championship with an 11-8 win against Lucas Lovejoy on June 1.
