Chicago had its cows, St. Paul had its Snoopy dogs, Fargo had its buffaloes and even Austin had its guitars but Plum Creek, in Kyle, may be the first ever rocking chair art initiative.

The project, “Rock the Porch” will launch at Plum Creek’s 12th Annual Front Porch Days May 4-5 and is calling for Hays County artists who would care to take on the challenge of creatively painting a rocking chair. The chairs will then be exhibited throughout Kyle.

“We’re looking for creative, different and thought-provoking ideas, ” said Front Porch public relations representative, Kelsey Kemper. ” It is sort of a take-off on the Chicago idea with the goal of raising awareness about our area, Hays County and the community.”

There will be an example of a chair to get the ball rolling and the younger generation isn’t left out either as there will be small chairs, bird houses and planters for purchase for the kids to paint. All proceeds from the sales will be donated to Hope and Love For Kids, a local non-profit organization with scholarships, school supply drives, holiday dinners and outreach programs for Hays County students.

Artists wishing to apply to be a part of the “Rock The Porch” project can find a link for the application at

“We’ll be accepting artist applications from people in Kyle, Buda and San Marcos until May 15th,” Kemper said.  “During the summer we will be documenting the art creation process with pictures, artist profiles and such. We’re hoping to have the art pieces out in the community and in Kyle by early or late August.”

“Rock The Porch” is just one of the many things taking place at Front Porch Days. The event includes live music for the kids with Rockaroni and Cheese, the Biscuit Brothers and Curious Chords School of Music. The adult musical fare features Bruce Curtis Fallgren, Blue Water Highway Band and 80s Agenda.

There will also be a garden tour, face painting. inflatable games, the Jiggle Bug Express, pony rides, a pie baking contest, a skating exposition and a petting zoo.

  1. I’m certain the Plum Creek residents who live near the Sonic could give an excellent literal artistic interpretation to the “rock the porch” theme. LOL
