A great weekend of pitching led the Texas State softball team to two wins in three games at Texas-Arlington (UTA) during the weekend.
The Bobcats gave up only one run in the three games, though that run cost them in a 1-0 loss on Sunday. The Bobcats won the two Saturday games, 5-0 and 2-0.
The victories improved the Bobcats to 6-6 in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and 11-30 overall. After starting the season 5-26, the Bobcats appear to have stabilized a bit, winning six of their last ten.
Now comes a huge series this weekend with New Mexico State visiting Bobcat Field for a Friday double-header (4 p.m.) and a single game on Saturday (1 p.m.). New Mexico State leads the WAC at 11-1 and 30-14.
The Bobcats won the opener, 5-0, behind a complete-game, six-hit shutout by Rayn House, who struck out seven. House improved her record to 4-12. Kelli Baker, Anna Hernandez and Macie Hair all had three hits for Texas State, with Baker driving in three runs.
Ashley Wright and House combined for a five-hit shutout in the second game, a 2-0 Texas State win. Wright improved her record to 6-11, while House recorded her first save of the season. Jordan Masek had three hits, including a homer, for Texas State.
The Bobcats lost the final game, managing only five hits in a 1-0, eight-inning loss. UTA prevailed with a walk-off sacrifice fly. Wright pitched seven shutout innings, but couldn’t survive the eighth and fell to 6-12.
The Bobcats will play Tuesday at home against Texas A&M (6:30 p.m.) before New Mexico State comes to San Marcos for the weekend.
