A woman attempting to walk across Interstate 35 about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday has died after being transported to University Medical Center at Brackenridge in Austin.

Police are withholding her name pending notification of next of kin.

According to Sgt. Brandon Winkenwerder, the woman was attempting to cross I-35 in the 800 block of I-35 in San Marcos when she was hit by a southbound vehicle that tried to stop but struck the pedestrian. The driver suffered a broken right hand and was treated and at Central Texas Medical Center.

Investigators said evidence at the scene indicated that neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the crash. The roadway was wet with a light rain falling.

Pedestrians crossing a controlled access highway such as I-35 is illegal.
