The Texas State baseball team might have found its footing by winning two of three during the weekend in its first Western Athletic Conference (WAC) series. The Bobcats certainly found some hitting.
The Bobcats prevailed at New Mexico State by taking the final two games after losing the opener. The Bobcats hit all weekend — 41 hits total in the three games.
Texas State now is 2-1 in th WAC and 9-14 overall. New Mexico State is 1-2 and 13-12.
Texas State lost the opener on March 22, 12-6. The Bobcats took a 4-0 lead in the second inning, but the game got away from them when New Mexico State scored four times each in the fourth and fifth innings. Austin O’Neal led the Bobcats with three hits and Kevin Sah had two RBI.
The Bobcats came back to win the second game, 10-3, scoring five times in the fourth inning for a 5-0 lead. Sah hit a solo homer to lead the charge. Meanwhile, Texas State starter Scott Grist allowed no runs through six innings. New Mexico State finally got to Grist for three in the seventh, but Texas State already had a 10-0 lead by then.
Texas State won the deciding third game late style, erasing a 7-5 deficit with five runs in the sixth inning and adding on in the last two innings. Morgan Micken had four hits, while Sah and Cody Lovejoy each had two each. Nick Smelser had four RBI for Texas State.
The Bobcats will play at Texas Tuesday night (6 p.m.).
