Heading to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) season this weekend, the Texas State softball team is 5-22 after losing three of four last weekend at the Capitol Classic in Sacramento, CA.
The Bobcats won their opener, 1-0, against homestanding Sacramento State. However, Texas State then lost, 4-2, to Kansas before absorbing losses of 6-1 to Fresno State and 8-2 to St. Mary’s.
Pitching carried the Bobcats to their opening win. Rayne House pitched a complete-game three-hitter with six strikeouts for the shutout victory, improving her record to 2-8. Haley Lemons supplied the only offense the Bobcats would need or manage, bashing a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Against Kansas, Courtney Harris hit a two-run double in the third inning, giving the Bobcats a 2-1 lead. The game was tied, 2-2, going to the sixth inning, but the Jayhawks scored twice in the frame for their 4-2 win.
Fresno State scored twice on the Bobcats in the top of the first and led throughout its 6-1 win. The Bobcats made it 2-1 in the bottom of the first on a one-out double by Lemons, but couldn’t tie the game. Lemons, Coralee Ramirez and Jordan Masek each had two hits for Texas State.
Texas State’s final game in the tournament got away quickly. St. Mary’s scored five times in the bottom of the first inning for a 5-0 lead. The Bobcats totalled five hits for the whole game.
The WAC season begins Friday at Bobcat Field against Texas-San Antonio (6 p.m.). Those same two teams will convene at that same place again on Saturday at 1 p.m.
