The Texas State men’s basketball team lost at home against Idaho on Saturday, meaning the Bobcats are certain to start the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament from the league’s bottom four.

It’s a long way from the Final Four. As one of the bottom four teams in the 10-team WAC, the Bobcats will participate in, effectively, a play-in round to see which two of the will join the top six in the league quarterfinals. The other teams in the bottom four scrum will be Texas-San Antonio (UTSA), San Jose State and Seattle.

The Bobcats’ 90-81 loss to Idaho put them at 4-12 in the league and 9-20 overall, while Idaho is 6-11 and 11-17. Texas State will play its last two games of the regular season this week, going to Utah State Thursday and San Jose State on Saturday.

Texas State stayed pretty even with Idao for the first 15 minutes Saturday, but Idaho tacked up eight straight points for a 39-31 lead with 1:58 left before intermission. Deonte Jones nailed two three-pointers for Texas State in the final minute of the first half, bringing the Bobcats within 41-39 at th break. Jones then hit another three early in the second half to give the Bobcats a 42-41 lead.

But Idaho responded with a 20-5 run for a 61-46 lead. The Bobcats cut their deficit to 68-64 with 7:11 remaining, but Idaho scored the next ten points and the Bobcats were never back in it.

Kyle Barone of Idaho led all scorers with 26 points, adding 14 rebounds. Matt Staff led the Bobcats with 22 points.
