The San Marcos Fire Department saved an undisclosed amount of money from burning up when firefighters doused an engine fire in a Brink’s armored vehicle Monday on Interstate 35.
The driver and passenger were not injured. They tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher but high winds thwarted their efforts, said Battalion Chief Jim Matano. The engine area and cab were on fire and heavy smoke was coming out the rear when firefighters arrived around 4:24 p.m. at the scene on the northbound side of Interstate 35 near exit 200.
Firefighters extinguished the engine fire before it spread to the rear compartment. While the cab and engine were severely damaged, the contents were saved, according to Fire Chief Les Stephens.
Firefighters remained at the scene until the truck was removed from the highway. Cause of the fire was unknown.
