The early returns for the Texas State baseball team after opening the season with three games at home over the weekend at Bobcat Field: two well pitched games, one explosive inning at the plate, two losses, one win.
Thus, the Bobcats are 1-2 heading into tonight’s game at Baylor (6:35 p.m.).
The Bobcats lost, 3-2, in their opener against Missouri State last Friday, then came back the next day with a 2-0 win against Tulane. The Bobcats ended their weekend with a topsy-turvy, 10-9 loss to Sam Houston.
Texas State wasted a good opening day start by Kyle Finnegan, who allowed two earned runs and struck out 11 in six innings. Finnegan gave up two in the third inning, but the Bobcats tied it, 2-2, with two runs in the seventh. Missouri State won the game with a run in the 11th inning, when Dylan Becker’s one-out single knocked in Eric Cheray, who led off the inning with a walk off Hunter Lemke and took second on a sacrifice bunt.
A day later, Taylor Black opened his season with a gem for Texas State, throwing 7 2/3 shutout innings of four-hit ball in a 2-0 win against Tulane. Black struck out seven and walked two. The Bobcats scored both of their runs in the eighth inning.
But Texas State lost again the following day. Down, 8-1, the Bobcats scored eight times in the seventh for a 9-8 lead. But Sam Houston State scored twice in the ninth for the 10-9 win.
Despite their seventh-inning outburst against Sam Houston, Texas State batted only .176 over the three games. However, the three Texas State opponents combined to bat only .224.
