SUBMITTED REPORT

Quick action by the San Marcos Fire Department averted destruction of the Old Fish Hatchery Community Building at San Marcos Plaza Park Sunday night.

The fire department was dispatched shortly before 10 p.m. to the fire which damaged the back stairs and porch of the century-old building. The building suffered major damage to the exterior and smoke and water damage inside.

The Old Fish Hatchery Community Building is part of the park system and is popular for public and private events and meetings. The building will be out of service until repairs can be made. The cause of the fire is under investigation by Fire Marshal Ken Bell. No cost estimates on the damage were available.

In 2009, a fire across the river in City Park severely damaged the City Park Recreation Hall, which has since been rebuilt.
