The San Marcos Rattlers won twice last week, clinching a high school boys basketball playoff spot in District 25-5A.
But the Rattlers are after much larger game than a playoff spot. With three games remaining in the regular season, the Rattlers lead the district at 6-1 (17-12 overall). All of those games are against the teams that are gunning for them in pursuit of the district title.
Tuesday, the Rattlers go to Converse Judson (5-2, 24-7). Friday, they will play at home against San Antonio Wagner (5-2, 19-11). And, in their final game of the regular season on Feb. 12, the Rattlers go to New Braunfels Canyon (3-4, 17-13).
The Rattlers clinched their playoff spot on Feb. 1 with a 63-50 win at home against New Braunfels (0-7, 8-23). The Rattlers built a 31-24 halftime lead and closed the deal with a 19-12 third quarter. The 13-point victory represents the only time this year in which the Rattlers won a district game by more than three points.
Alex Frye led the Rattlers with 15 points. Martin Gonzales of New Braunfels led all scorers with 16 points.
On Jan. 29, the Rattlers snuck through in overtime, 78-77, at Smithson Valley. Josh Coleman made a free throw with one second remaining to give the Rattler their winning margin. Frye led the Rattlers with 20 points, followed by Coleman with 18. A.C. Reid scored 36 for Smithson Valley to lead all scorers.
The Rattlers will play at Judson Tuesday night at 7 p.m.Email | Print
