Matt Staff scored 20 points with 10 rebounds in Texas State’s 86-72 loss to New Mexico State Thursday night (Texas State sports information image).
New Mexico State shot 55.6 percent (30 of 54) Thursday night at Strahan Coliseum, snapping Texas State’s three-game winning streak by defeating the Bobcats, 86-72.
The Bobcats will try it again at home today (2 p.m.) against Denver.
Texas State now is 3-7 in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and 7-15 overall. Denver, like New Mexico State, is 8-2 in the WAC, tied for second place behind Louisiana Tech (9-0).
Texas State held a 25-24 lead with 9:12 left in the first half, but New Mexico State scored the next nine points and never looked back. The Aggies led, 45-36, at halftime.
Matt Staff led the Bobcats with 20 points and ten rebounds. Joel Wright, coming off his WAC Player of the Week performances, made only three of 18 field goal attempts and finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Bandja Sy of New Mexico State led all players with 24 points and 13 rebounds.
