STAFF REPORT

Following back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament, the Texas State softball team is the pick of Western Athletic Conference (WAC) coaches to win the league in 2013, the only season during which it will be a member.

The Bobcats received five of eight first-place votes and a total of 43 voting points, nudging out San Jose State, which received 42 total voting points and two first-place votes. The other first-place vote went to New Mexico State, which finished third overall with 39 points.

Texas State returns all of its starters from last year’s team, which finished 39-17 overall and 18-2 in the Southland Conference.

Texas State seniors Anna Hernandez and Anne Marie Taylor both were named to the WAC preseason team. Hernandez, a second baseman from Buda, batted .304 last season, leading the Bobcats in slugging (.404) and on-base percentage (.381). Taylor, a pitcher, finished 17-8 with a 1.71 ERA.

The Bobcats will open their season Feb. 8-10 at the University of Houston Tournament. The other teams in the tournament will be Houston, Iowa and Lipscomb.
