The San Marcos Rattlers are quite the cardiac kids in high school boys basketball right now. More than that, they are all alone on top of District 25-5A with another game coming up at home tonight against San Antonio Wagner.
The Rattlers prevailed against Converse Judson’s slow-down tactics last Friday night for a 34-33 win at home against the Rockets, who entered the game ranked No. 15 in Texas by the state’s basketball coaches. A bucket by Alex Frye with two seconds left sealed the deal for San Marcos.
San Marcos now is 3-0 in the district, with all three wins coming on last-second shots. They are 14-11 overall. Judson fell to 2-1 and 21-6. The Rattlers play again tonight at San Antonio Wagner (7 p.m.) Wagner is 2-1 and 16-10.
Judson outrebounded the Rattlers, 30-17. In addition, Judson made nine of ten free throws, compared with five of six for San Marcos.
But the Rattlers excelled in the defensive floor game, making eight steals and five deflections. And, on a night when neither team shot well, the Rattlers were just a little better, making 13 of 34 shots (38) percent, while Judson made 11 of 35 (31 percent). While the two teams combined to make only two of 23 three-point shots, the Rattlers were 12 of 22 from inside the arc (55 percent).
Frye led the Rattlers with 12 points, making all four of his field goal attempts.
