The U.S. Postal Service will shutter its downtown location and re-open before the end of the month near the booming Wonder World Drive/Hunter Road area in south San Marcos.

The new post office will be located at at 210 S. Stagecoach Road where a carrier annex was recently expanded and renovated to include a retail counter and other public accommodations  Post office boxes will be transferred to the Stagecoach location and keep the 78667 zip code. The new post office opens Jan. 28.

USPS’s acre of property at Guadalupe and Hutchison streets was sold to a company organized as 301 N. Guadalupe LLC/Arqueo LLC. The 18,660 square foot building was built in 1959.

Announced yesterday, the move was not unexpected. The San Marcos Mercury reported in December 2011 that the downtown post office would close when the property sold.
