The boys basketball team at San Marcos High School won its District 25-5A opener last Friday night when Josh Coleman made a layup with two seconds remaining for a 62-60 home court win against Smithson Valley.

The Rattlers, 11-11 overall, will go to New Braunfels Tuesday night and try to improve their mark against the Unicorns, who are 0-1 and 8-16. The Unicorns lost their district opener, 26-20, to Canyon last Friday.

In the Rattlers’ tightly contested game against Smithson Valley, neither team led by more than three at any quarter break. The Rattlers trailed, 19-16, after one quarter, 35-33, at halftime and, 46-45, after three quarters. By staying close, the Rattlers gave themselves a chance in the end when Coleman took his game-winning shot.

Isaiah Brown led San Marcos with 18 points and nine rebounds. Alex Frye added 17 points and seven rebounds for the Rattlers.
