After a deluge of rain overnight, the midday skies are relatively clear with the San Marcos area experiencing intermittent showers.

As of 10:45 a.m., however, the National Weather Service has renewed a hazardous weather outlook advisory for Hays, Caldwell and 31 other Texas counties. The notice states, “Showers and thunderstorms producing locally heavy rainfall are still possible this afternoon, mainly east of a line from Taylor to Gonzales.”

Other counties included in the advisory include Llano, Burnet, Williamson, Val Verde, Edwards, Real, Kerr, Bandera, Gillespie, Kendall, Balnco, Travis, Bastrop, Lee, Kinney, Uvalde, Frio, Atacosa, Wilson, Karnes, Gonzales, De Witt, Lavaca and Dimmit.

All 18 major low-water crossings in Hays County were passable as of noon.

  1. Weather is driven by air pressure (temperature and moisture) differences between one place and another. These pressure and temperature differences can occur due to the sun angle at any particular spot, which varies by latitude from the tropics. The strong temperature contrast between polar and tropical air gives rise to the jet stream. Weather systems in the mid-latitudes, such as extratropical cyclones, are caused by instabilities of the jet stream flow. `
