Once again Texas State’s Mariachi Nueva Generacion took first place at the annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza at the Lila Cockrell Theatre in San Antonio on Dec. 1. It is the sixth time the group has taken the honor over the course of the last seven years.
The competition includes an ensemble portion on Friday evening followed by a vocal competition on Saturday morning. Texas State’s Karen Zavala won Best in the U.S. in the vocal competition. Team mate Nelson Ruiz finished third. Competing in the event since 2009, Texas State has developed a cadre of participating champion vocalists.
It is widely held throughout the mariachi community that the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza is one of the premier mariachi competitions in the country. Mariachi Nueva Generacion has been competing in the event since 2003.
Mariachi Nueva Generacion will be featured at Feria del Mariachi, the spring festival taking place in March of 2013. At the festival the Texas State School of Music’s Latin Music Studies program will present a “Rising Star” award to America’s Got Talent semifinalist, Sebastien De La Cruz.
